Dairy welfare, we care. Animal husbandry survey 2014

Document produced by Dairy Aust. They conducted a survey of random dairy farms via phone calls (not site visits) and discussed the following 'welfare' topics-
› Disbudding calves in preference to dehorning older stock (painful procedure to remove cow's horns)
› Management of bobby calves, particularly in regards to transporting and managing antibiotic treatments where given (removing babies from their mother and sending them to slaughter)
› Calving induction (forced abortions)
› Tail docking (cutting off tails)
› Lameness
› Downer cows (cows that can no longer stand)
› Herd nutrition programs and monitoring
› Disease risk management and biosecurity
› Staff training in the above areas
Less than half of dairy farms have 'animal welfare' policies in place.
› Awareness of industry standards
