Sow Stalls - Life on a farm for breeding mother pigs is punishing. They languish in one kind of pen or another for about 3 years, having roughly 5 litters of piglets and never once going outside that is, until their sent to slaughter.

Witness #1

Many sit up as we walk in. Anything, anything at all breaks the brain numbing boredom of living behind bars, often unable to simply turn around. Some are even angry, driven mad from psychological torment of their nothingness existence. Many don't bother at all, seemingly broken spirits, a state known in psychology as 'learned helplessness' where one tolerates suffering without resistance after a long experience of enduring the suffering.

Did you know that this would be illegal if done to a dog or cat? And yet pigs are classified as the fourth smartest non-human animals in the world, capable of complex thought and emotion.
